Javier Baez is a popular Puerto Rican professional baseball shortstop for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). Before then, he played for the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets. In this post, we will take a look at who Javier Baez’s parents Nelida Agosto and Ángel Luis Baez are. Keep reading for more.
Javier Baez Biography
Baez was born and raised in Puerto Rico on December 1, 1992. He moved to Florida in 2005 with his family, including his sister Noely, who needed medical treatment for her spina bifida condition. Baez’s father, Angel Luis Baez, heavily influenced his interest in baseball, but unfortunately passed away when Javier was only ten years old.
As a middle school student, Javier struggled with the language barrier, as he was unable to speak or understand English fluently. However, he eventually learned the language through trial and error in a process that lasted for three years, memorizing words before knowing their actual meaning.
Despite initial scepticism from scouts, Baez’s work ethic and talent led him to be recognized as a top prospect. During his high school career, Baez was a highly rated Aflac All-American, and he committed to play college baseball at Jacksonville University. The Chicago Cubs selected Baez in the first round, with the ninth overall selection, of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.
Baez began his professional career by playing shortstop for the Arizona Cubs of the Rookie-level Arizona League, where he only played in three games. He was later promoted to the Boise Hawks of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League. After struggling in spring training, Baez was eventually called up to the major leagues in 2014 as part of the September call-ups.
In 2020, Baez struggled at the plate with a .203 batting average and the lowest on-base percentage of all qualified NL batters. Baez attributed his struggles at the plate to the ban on in-game video review that the MLB implemented in the aftermath of the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal. Despite the setbacks, Baez remained resilient and continued to work on his game.
Unfortunately, Baez’s struggles continued into the 2023 season, where he was benched for “rest purposes” after batting .100 in the first five games. He was later benched again for not running hard out of the box and mistakenly thinking there were two outs. However, Baez remains determined to improve his game and bounce back from these setbacks.
